How to Import Contacts

Here’s how to import contacts using the TextSpot SMS software:

When importing contacts, TextSpot now has the ability to automatically match fields, making the import process easier.

If you want to import any information beyond name and phone number, you will need to create custom fields before importing. For more information on how to set up custom fields, check out our guide on Getting Started with Custom Contact Fields.

  1. After you have signed up for a free account or are logged in to your TextSpot account, go to “Contacts” on the left side of the TextSpot application under the "Recipients" section.

  2. Select “Import Contacts” at the top right (you can also individually add one contact at a time).

A pop up window will appear with directions, including a link to a sample CSV file. The imported file must be a valid CSV or Excel file containing at least one column of phone number values. The second and third columns may be first and last names, respectively.

If you have additional columns that include information such as these field types:

    • Text: Perfect for names, notes, or any free-form text.

    • Number: Track quantities, amounts, or other numeric values.

    • Date: Ideal for birthdays, anniversaries, or deadlines.

    • URL: Include website links that are automatically shortened with the TextSpot link shortener, with link clicks tracked for each contact.

    • Address: Capture physical locations with proper formatting.

Create these custom field types first in TextSpot.

  3. Once you have a file with your contacts you can select “Select a file to import” to select the file from your computer.

  4. Check the agreement box and then select “Next”

    Any errors will be outlined.

Imports are limited to 5,000 contacts at a time.

Only CSV or Excel files are accepted.

  5. After importing your file, you should see a pop-up like this. Select, or deselect, the custom fields that you want to be captured and applied to all of your contacts. Select " Next."

That's it. You've now imported contacts to your TextSpot account!
